Week 1 P90X...Good and Bad

So, Last week I started P90X again. Here's a word of caution to those of you that have done P90X and are coming back to it after a long layoff or injury etc.

FORGET WHAT YOU DID BEFORE!!!

I made a vital mistake when I started this last week. I remembered my numbers from my previous workouts. Since I've done 2 rounds of P90X over the last year, I know what my body is capable of. Last fall, I started with a 3 pull up max, and 4-5 months later I was at 18.

So, what did I do wrong this time? I remembered some of the numbers I've hit before. I pushed myself way too hard for essentially starting from scratch. Chest and Back went pretty well. I pushed myself for extra reps here and there. I went into Plyo on Day 2, no issues. My arms were a bit sore. However, on Day 3, my arms were on fire. The tendons around my elbows were throbbing constantly. I never experienced this kind of pain during my previous experiences with P90X.

There's a fine line between working hard and feeling the burn and being injured. I think I was pushing myself past that line. The pain in my elbow joints was terrible. I was choking down Advil just to get through the day on the weekend. So, I did some light cardio.

I'm starting P90X over again this Wednesday. I'm going to hold back a bit here and there. While my mind is strong enough to push through, right now my mind is further along than my body is ready for.

So, there's some of the new challenges of getting back into a workout program as tough as P90X after an extended absence. I'm not saying one should dog it and hold back, but listen to your body. Know the difference between post workout soreness, and "that doesn't feel right."

Take care and Bring It!

John

  2. eeek....that does sound painful. I know when you're a "go getter" like you and I are...it's hard to ever not go full throttle..but then we pay for it later. I hope you take a it a teensy bit easier this next time and push hard...but not too hard! Thanks for being so honest with us all though...it's great to be reminded that we are ALL human. :o)

  3. I hear you. my advice for what its worth. Train hard, dont kill your sell, especially dont get to hard on yourself if you miss a workout. Put all the hard work into ensuring the diet is 100%. My experience is that getting the results is 30% exercise and 70% diet.

  4. great post... I was 'lucky' enough to have two things happen before i started p90x

    1. I got a pullup bar and decided to do Tabata training even though i hardly ever do pullups... i literally (no bs... literally) couldn't extend my arms for over a week.

    2. a youtube vid that suggested if your just getting back or just starting do 75% the first week or two and get your body used to it...

    I feel your pain.

  5. I posted something similar to this today......my neck is killing me after the Check and Back workout last night. I pushed myself really hard and now I can hardly turn my head. What do you recommend I do for the next week? I wanted to push myself pretty hard this week since its week 3 of Phase I and next week is recovery. However I pushed past the pain and now I am paying. It is difficult to tell when to keep pushing and when to stop during the workouts. Is a bit of neck pain normal? It doesnt feel like soreness, it feels like I need acupuncture or a good massage.

  6. I remember when I first started p90x, I could hardly do 1 pull up but through every workout I kept trying. By the end of the 90 days I am able to do 12. I had to push myself through the pain cause it does hurt.

For Dark Jedi- It sounds like you strained your neck. I have done that many times, so before and after I workout I am sure to stretch the neck muscles out and just pay attention to how I put strain on my neck.

    Good luck!

  7. Glad you are getting back into P90X!

I did shoulders/arms today, I love that workout.

I am actually on week 3 of INSANITY but I did arms today too.

  8. I google searched for p90x bicep and elbow pain feel good that I'm not alone. My right bicep and both elbows are trashed. It hurts when I lift the gallon of milk out of the fridge. I went to ortho doc and he said bicep tendon seems fine but should schedule mri to see if any tears. I felt it doing pullups, but it really hit during the first bicep vid. Arm would actually feel numb up into shoulder and down to hand??? MRI results will dictate when I go back.

  9. I have neck problems and will probably get some c-spine steroid injections shortly, but I really want to get back in shape. I was wondering if I could still use some of the p90x dvds, keeping in mind my neck?
    Thanks!

  11. My biceps, elbows inside and out, and outside chest are shot after day 1 of P90X. I didn't think I was overdoing it but now on day 3, I realize there is no way I can complete shoulders/arms tonight. I can't lift my arms above my shoulders, I couldnt even button my own shirt today. Guess I'll take a mild break.

  12. You'll get used to it in no time. Taking a break will help relax your sore muscles.
